Decomposition Method – PBS:-

Decomposition is a general approach to solving a problem by breaking it up into smaller ones and solving each of the smaller ones separately, either in parallel or sequentially. Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) – A hierarchy of all the products to be produced. A PBS is useful for describing the products to be delivered and their essential components. Each product is divided into its component elements in a hierarchical manner, and the requirements for those elements are collected.

This is a sample and partial PBS for a new model of car. This further can be decomposed to the last level of items required.

Decomposition Method – WBS:-

Decomposition is a general approach to solving a problem by breaking it up into smaller ones and solving each of the smaller ones separately, either in parallel or sequentially.

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) :-

  • PMP defines WBS as – “a deliverable-oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team to accomplish the project objectives and create the required deliverables.”
  • PRINCE2 defines WBS as “A hierarchy of all work done during a project that forms a link between the product breakdown structure and the work packages.”

There are different ways to organise WBS as follows :-

  • Product bases / Deliverable based
  • Project Phase based
  • Project Teams based

Decomposition Method – WBS:-

Decomposition is a general approach to solving a problem by breaking it up into smaller ones and solving each of the smaller ones separately, either in parallel or sequentially. A risk breakdown structure (RBS) is a hierarchical chart that helps project managers identify and manage risks associated with a project.

Purpose :-

  • RBS help project managers understand and manage risks, and can be used for a variety of purposes, including risk reporting, identifying gaps, and calculating risk scores.

Structure :-

  • RBS are hierarchical, starting with high-level risks and breaking them down into more specific sub-risks.

Benefits :-

  • Better management of risks and planning for mitigation
  • Compare projects and make decisions by prioritising multiple factors

Decomposition approach is not only restricted for PBS, WBS and RBS. It is a generic method to decompose any problem in smaller size and complexity to control the same.
